What to tell your English Italian translator
Before starting a translation project, it is helpful to provide the following information to your translator:
- What is the translation for? If you are going to publish your translation, make sure the translator knows this and puts in the extra proofreading work to ensure a perfect result. (Offering to publish a translation credit with the translator's name, when possible, can provide extra motivation to the translator to do his or her best work).
"It is very useful to have background information about the purpose of the translation. It will help the translator to use the right kind of language. For example, writing for the Web is different from writing for a brochure. Writing for advertising is different from writing to report information."

- Who will be reading the translation? Is it for doctors? For teenagers? The vocabulary and tone will not be the same. Make sure the translator knows.
- If your translation is from English to Italian, remember that Italian has different formal and informal forms of address. If you know which one should be used, be sure to tell the English Italian translator. If you're not sure but have previous similar translations for your company, send them to the translator so that he or she can use them as a reference.
- Do you have past translations or other corporate materials in the translator's language? If so, it can be extremely helpful to send these to the translator as a reference. If you would like the translator to stay consistent with these materials in terms of terminology and style, then let him or her know.
- Can you provide relevant background information? If the translation is on a technical topic, do you know of websites or other resources where the translator can go to understand the topic better?
"It's useful to send as many resources as possible so that the translator can read about the area as background information."

- In what format do you want the translation completed? In general, professional translators tend to maintain the format of the original document, returning a mirror image of it in the new language. But if you don't provide clear instructions anything can happen.
Do you want the English and Italian versions side by side? Tell the translator. Does your document contain code that should not be modified? Tell the translator, and make sure that he or she knows how to work with the document format without breaking the code.
If you have special format requirements, and especially if you need the translations completed in graphical formats, the translator may not have the necessary capabilities or may charge extra for the work. It's important to discuss this ahead of time.
Remember that the translated text may not be the same size as the original. If you need the translation to stay within certain length paremeters, provide relevant instructions. For example, if the translation is for a website or brochure and some of the texts will be used for buttons, be sure that the translator knows that so that he or she can try to keep the translations suitably short.
