"Why should I pay for a Spanish translation if I can get a free one online?" This is a question we hear frequently. In fact, we think that machine translators and human translators have totally different functions. A machine translator is much, much faster than a human when you want to translate a whole website or a long text from Spanish to English and get an idea of what it is saying. You can use it for free and translate Spanish words to English with just a click. On the other hand, if you want to write something in a foreign language that other people will read, a machine really can't be trusted for that.
"Language is something that only humans can come up with." Eva Obregon, English to Spanish Translator
Any free online Spanish translator has definite limitations. Machine translators are like advanced dictionaries. They can convert words or phrases to another language, but they don't actually know what they are talking about or how it sounds. Why is this a problem?Look at this example of machine translation from Spanish to English (from a Spanish Wikipedia article about Britney Spears): "Its success in the musical industry, has given the opportunity him to participate in other fields of means, including the cinema and the television. The most recognized it has been the protagónico paper that it interpreted in 2002 in the Crossroads film." What went wrong here? 1) The word "su" in Spanish can mean either "he," "she," or "it." The machine translator chose wrong. 2) The word "medios" in Spanish can either mean "media" or "means." The machine translator chose wrong. 3) The word "papel" in Spanish can mean either "role" or "part" (as in, a part in a movie), or "paper." The machine chose wrong. And so on. Machine translations often end up sounding weird, being hard to understand, or even meaning something different from the original. We therefore suggest using them for help reading or for reference, but not for writing.
"People don't realize translation is a craft. They think that it's like you're a computer, you put in one language and output another one, and that's not how it works. You really have to understand the original very well. You have to be able to analyze and synthesize, to do both. Basically, it’s rewriting something -- it's not just looking up words in dictionary and writing different words in the same order." - Eva Obregon, English to Spanish Translator
