Free English to Spanish Translation Pricing Guide: Costs of Translation from Spanish to English
This free English to Spanish Translation Price Guide includes examples of typical translator rates, as well as more information based on our past experience running a translation agency in Spain. (Were you looking for a free Spanish translator?) Price calculationTranslation prices are generally based on a per word rate, which is multiplied by the number of words in the document. It is more common to use "source words" (words in the original language) for this calculation; however, in some cases, a translator might use "target words" (words in the final translated language). Be aware that in translations from English to Spanish, the number of target words may be 20% or 25% higher than the source word count. Freelance ratesIn order to give you a general picture of the freelance translator rates, we have collected the advertised rates of 20 freelance Spanish translators. All of the translators included in the list are U.S. residents, but translators in different locations may charge different rates. It is also important to note that the prices below are the official rates published by these translators. In reality, translation rates are often negotiable, and the actual rates charged by these translators may be lower.

"You have to keep in mind that, basically, you're paying for the translator's time. You might find a cut-rate translation, but obviously, that person in order to make a living will not be able to spend much time on your project. You have to bear in mind that quality takes time." - Eva Obregon, English to Spanish Translator Read more advice from Eva on translation from Spanish to English in our Free English to Spanish Translation Guide
Agency ratesTranslation agencies normally charge higher rates than freelance translators. After all, they have higher overhead costs. They normally outsource translations to a pool of freelancers, so they have to cover freelance fees as well as office infrastructure, project manager salaries, marketing costs, and so on. "Although most agencies are very professional and very strict about hiring only professional translators, there are some that cut costs by working with translators who are just starting out and have less experience or by hiring people who aren’t full-time professional translators and are doing this to make some extra cash." - Eva Obregon, English to Spanish Translator Read more advice from Eva on translation from Spanish to English in our Free English to Spanish Translation Guide
Agency case studiesWhile managing a translation agency located in Spain, we hired European Spanish translators at rates ranging between €0.06 [currently about $0.09] and €0.08 [currently about $0.12]. While these rates were high for the Spanish market, we found that the quality dropped significantly at lower rates. We did not find any Spanish translators who met our standards at rates lower than €0.05 [currently about $0.08]. On the other hand, when we compared notes with a former project manager who had worked for several competing agencies in Spain, she expressed shock at the rates we were paying. She reported that the agencies for which she had worked did not pay Spanish translators more than €0.04 per word (note: the same translators likely charged higher rates to end clients than they did to these agencies). Her agencies typically set their client prices by doubling the rates that they paid to translators. She also informed us that the agencies for which she worked did not pay for revision by separate editors, but regularly misled clients about their revision practices.
