Foreign Language Translation Bloopers

When the task of foreign language translation gets into the wrong hands, the results can be hilarious or alarming. For example:

  • On a restaurant menu in Spain: "Artichokes attacked by ham." (Call the police!)
  • In a supermarket in China: "Fresh Herpes" (We really hope they meant herbs.)

Have YOU seen any terrible translations lately?

Inscrutable street signs, ridiculous restaurant menus, instruction manuals that made you want to tear your hair out?

Have you visited a tourist destination with a "do-it-yourself" attitude to translation? Have you bought any foreign-made products with bizarre packaging copy?

Share your stories and photos so that we can laugh and cry along with you.

Only submit original, previously unpublished stories, please. Your contribution may be published on our blog or on a separate Web page, and if you choose to provide your name, you will be credited as the author.
