Comparing Dutch English Translation Options

Freelance Dutch to English translator, agency, or free Dutch English translation tool... which option is right for your project and your budget? This comparison will help you make the right choice. At the bottom of the page, you’ll also find typical Dutch to English translator rates, and other useful resources.

Options for Your Dutch English Translation

There are many ways to get a Dutch translation. Each option has its pros and cons, and the best choice will depend on your specific situation.

These translation options include:

  • A machine translator / free online translation
  • An amateur translator (student, intern, colleague, etc. -- someone who speaks the language but is not a professional linguist)
  • A professional freelance translator
  • A translation agency

Option 1 - Machine translator

A free online Dutch to English translator can be a good choice if the translation is just for you, and if your only purpose is to understand the general meaning of a Dutch language website or text. However, a machine-generated Dutch English translation should not be used for communicating or when you need a precise understanding of a text.

Pros:

  • Free
  • By far the fastest option
  • Convenient

Cons:

  • Absolutely unreliable. The translation is likely to sound very strange and to contain errors.

Option 2 - Amateur translator

If you have friends, colleagues, or acquaintances who speak both Dutch and English, they may be able to help you with a Dutch English translation. Or you might be able to hire a Dutch-speaking student for a low price. For informal translations, where the quality of the final text is not important, an amateur job may be a good option. However, for important translations, it is safer to go to a professional.

Professional translators are trained in specific skills that an amateur Dutch to English translator does not necessarily have. Just speaking languages does not mean that someone knows how to transfer meaning effectively from one language to another or to produce a polished text in the final language.

Pros:

  • Free or inexpensive

Cons:

  • Less reliable than a professional translation.

Option 3 - Professional freelance translator

A professional freelance translator is the ideal solution for many translation needs. A good translator specialized in the subject area of the translation can get the job done right, while charging less than a translation agency. On the other hand, it may take some time and effort to find the right person, and for complex or multilingual projects, the task of coordinating multiple freelance translators may be simply unmanageable.

Pros:

  • The opportunity to get a high quality translation for much less than agency rates
  • Direct interaction with your translator, offering greater control than working with an agency
  • The option to work with the same translator on multiple projects and build a relationship. With an agency, your projects are normally sourced to a pool of translators.

Cons:

  • Effort and potential cost of recruiting the right person
  • Greater risk than working through an agency, especially when working with a translator for the first time
  • Effort required to coordinate the project. In the case of multilingual projects, the project management burden may be excessive.

Option 4 - Translation agency

A translation agency will manage all aspects of your Dutch English translation for you -- translator selection and sourcing, project management, and, hopefully, quality control. Sending your translation to an agency is easy and convenient and may be the best option for complex or large projects, or when you have limited time to manage the project yourself. A good agency also adds a layer of quality control by having the translation reviewed by an editor. However, along with the extra convenience and service offered by translation agencies comes a higher price.

Pros:

  • Convenience
  • Speed
  • Reduced risk, additional quality control

Cons:

  • Higher cost versus working with a freelance translator
  • Loss of control that comes with handing over project management. When working with an agency, you normally do not choose your specific translator, and you have limited visibility into the process.

"You have to decide how big your translation job is and how critical it is to your business. If it's a big job, get an agency.

I did project management when I was working in the software, and I can do either project management or translation, but I also know that doing both at once is almost impossible. What an agency adds is that whole project management element, making sure that the work is on time, or dividing up the document between translators if it's a big job, and then putting everything back together again. And they charge for that. A decent agency will also get the work reviewed by a second translator."
